Sonja has two decades of practical experience within the companion animal industry in Victoria and New South Wales, Australia. These facilities have included animal shelters, municipality pounds, veterinary clinics and various kennel and catteries (such as training, boarding and quarantine facilities). From this wide-ranging experience, Sonja has great understanding in what features work well in an animal facility and what does not and can provide functional advice. This knowledge takes into account more than just animal-housing aspects of these facilities and includes strategic planning to take into consideration animal health, animal isolation / quarantine, administration, staff safety and work efficiency as well as customer appeal, safety and atmosphere.
Having up-to-date procedures which adhere to the relevant legislation is absolutely vital to any animal facility for various reasons including legal, personnel safety, animal welfare and work efficiency and consistency. Sonja’s education and experience has allowed her to become adept at writing up, drafting and reviewing animal facility procedural documents to ensure that they align with relevant legislative requirements. Sonja has also had experience in preparing for audits of animal facilities.
Over twenty years within the industry has allowed Sonja to learn and recognise the vital importance of team morale on the overall performance of staff and the impact on the welfare of the animals in their care.
Sonja has had a lot of experience in all aspects of team management, including strategic recruitment to encourage and foster a positive team morale. This is the first step to ensure not only great staff work efficiency but also staff retainment.
Staff training and assessment is also a vitally important aspect of team management to ensure all staff are properly trained and assessed. Having completed a Certificate IV Training and Assessment, Sonja has firsthand experience in training and assessing competencies of staff working directly with animals.
Ensuring proper staff management is also an important aspect, particularly in not for profit organisations where every cent may need to be justified. Strategic rostering helps ensure sufficient staff are rostered on for the appropriate workload and safety and also help minimise staff costs where able.
Sonja's post-graduate studies has allowed her to gain great experience in defining and analysing a problem and explaining possible solutions. With extensive experience in reviewing relevant scientific literature, Sonja can provide an in-depth and scientific background for use in funding or grant applications.
Sonja's practical experience within the industry has given her firsthand knowledge and understanding of industry-specific workplace health and safety.
